About

Welcome to my commentary about walking in the Lake District - my favourite area of England and along with Snowdonia in North Wales, the closest mountains to where I live.
These often mist shrouded hills may be modest in height but it is a  landscape of adventure where the constantly changing conditions add to both the variety and challenge - hike up Scafell Pike or Helvellyn and there's a good chance of experiencing all four seasons in one day. The National Park is extremely popular with tourists but there are many areas where quieter trails can be found and it is those I will try and concentrate on here. The mountains and high ground are referred to locally as the fells while the valleys are called dales - the names originating from the Norwegian fjell and dal - a relic of the region's Viking past.

The routes described here include the popular summits while trying to avoid the busier trails and also explore the less visited parts of the National Park. Some of these posts will also appear at Tales From the Hills or at Travel Stories and Short Adventures both of which are on the same theme though not devoted entirely to the Lake District, while I am also working on adding video of some of my activities to all three blogs.

Finally a note on The Wainwrights... while this blog isn't simply an account of walking these 214 fells (as documented by guidebook author AW Wainwright) the routes covered will refer to which of these summits are visited with further options for more hardcore peak baggers. Also as I head into the last few, there may be some shameless peak bagging on my own part too though the aim of the blog remains of course to explore Lakeland's beautiful scenery unconstrained by such things as tick lists!
